New CSC Service Helps Clients Cut Telecom Costs
An innovative service is now available for companies that face the daunting task of managing telecommunications expenses. CSC Telecom Expense Management (CSC TEM) is a new network service that can reduce telecom expenses by eliminating erroneous charges, while identifying opportunities for additional cost savings through elimination of unnecessary telecom lines.
CSC TEM, a component of CSC’s Converged Networks offering, is a non-disruptive, scalable solution that provides detailed information on an enterprise’s telecom assets and can show exactly how and where money is being spent. The solution builds upon CSC’s existing expense management offerings, while leveraging Quickcomm’s robust database software and CSC’s extensive IT infrastructure outsourcing expertise.
Cutting telecom waste
In recent years, managing telecom expenses has become increasingly complex, especially at large enterprises that support multiple locations. What’s more, even though telecom expenditures rank second only to payroll spending in some organizations, costs are often overlooked. Recent industry studies indicate that most companies are overpaying for telecom services, and in many cases, paying for services that are simply not required.
CSC TEM product manager Ian Murray says organizations traditionally have done an inadequate job of managing their telecom inventory. "In most cases, telecom inventory management and invoice reconciliation exist as separate entities," he says, leading to inefficiencies and waste. "For example, a company might install two T-1 lines because they are hosting a conference that they intend to use for a couple of weeks, only to find out two years later they are still paying for them."
CSC TEM detects unnecessary phone charges via an innovative database tool that combines telecom services inventory management with telecom invoice processing. The database also enables a powerful reporting engine that generates management reports designed to help enterprises create and enforce policies around telecom usage. In addition to reduced costs, CSC TEM delivers a number of business benefits, including improved invoice accuracy and the ability to identify and correct invoice anomalies in real-time.
Automated process
Typically, companies manage telecommunications costs by employing a telecom auditor to manually review expenses on a periodic basis. With CSC TEM, the telecom management process becomes more automated. The service provides organizations with a single unified, global telecom expense solution that works across all business units and geographies.
To begin with, telecom billing records are entered into a central database application, and all of a company’s phone numbers and circuits get matched up to valid physical locations. Murray says CSC TEM provides a substantial level of detail. "We can track cell phones, calling cards, pagers, conference lines, whatever the telecom technology is," he says. For example, CSC TEM can identify redundant circuits and also check to see if former employees are still incurring cell phone or home phone charges.
CSC TEM automatically verifies that only existing inventory is included on telecom vendor invoices, and then generates reports to check for conditions such as services being billed at closed locations. Management reports generated by the system include essential business metrics such as a breakdown of telecom costs by business unit and cost-per-user data.
"The service helps fill a gap in the marketplace," says Murray. "It provides for the full management of telecom inventory and billing using an approach that differentiates CSC from other vendors that provide similar services."
