Six CSC Employees Win Women of Color Awards

Six CSC employees were recognized for their achievements at the Women of Color in Technology Conference last weekend. The awards are intended to single out the most talented and experienced women of color in the IT field.

Maureen Holland, a staffing resource manager in CSC’s Global Transformation Solutions (GTS) unit, received one of the conference’s highest awards, the National Woman of Color Special Recognition Award. The award went out to 14 executives in IT positions throughout the United States. Holland received the award at a breakfast on October 11 and spoke at the ceremony.

In addition to Holland, five other CSC women were recognized. Sunitha Cerukuri and Archana Shet of GTS and Akiko Kizawa of the Consulting Group were named as Rising Stars, and Usha Ramaswamy of GTS and Jacqueline Grant of Global Infrastructure Services (GIS) were named as All Stars.

Holland, who joined CSC in 2000, is staffing manager for a major telecommunications client. In her resource management role, Holland is responsible for “getting the right people to the right project.” That involves moving people from projects with diminished workloads to projects that need people. When asked what she needed to accomplish her job, Holland replied, “A hard chin. You’re constantly asking people for help. Your negotiating skills have to be very refined.”

Holland says that the IT market can be difficult for women of color to penetrate, especially since the tech industry slump made IT jobs less lucrative and increased the surplus of qualified IT professionals. Holland entered the IT world as a recruiter, and credits her growth to managers who helped her stretch her abilities and to her service in the Navy. According to Holland, recognizing women of color who do well in IT can inspire others who enter the field. “There are opportunities for you,” she says to aspiring women. “You just have to have the intestinal fortitude.”
