Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas

In 2000, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas acquired two health plans. Already supporting more than 3.2 million members, BCBSTX immediately faced three new challenges: to convert acquired membership (462,000 customers); to train new employees; and to facilitate continued growth.

The solution

The solution was twofold: CSC’s PowerMHSTM system and our healthcare and IT experts. PowerMHSTM, CSC’s claims and plan administration system, solved several problems. Its ability to handle large volumes and interface easily with other systems allowed seamless integration, and its flexibility provided fast data conversions. Its user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) helped new hires learn the system quickly. And its scalability will enable BCBSTX to manage fast growth. Finally, CSC’s experts went on location to assist with system upgrades and conversions.

Intuitive system helps new employees

Since the acquisitions, BCBSTX has hired approximately 270 additional employees, and new hires are quickly learning to navigate the screens. Kathleen Leifker, manager of HMO operations development, says, "The CSC team is very helpful. They are like one of the family here. We can always rely on them to help us and answer any questions we have."

Added HIPAA benefit

With regard to HIPAA, Bruce Francis, vice president of information technology says, "We do not want to underplay HIPAA. We realize the regulations will have a significant impact on all healthcare recipients and, by using a product like PowerMHSTM, we will all be able to get down that HIPAA road in a collaborative effort."
