Increasing traffic on a Web site is one thing. Managing those new visitors with user-friendly controls, efficiency and cost restraints is another. That's why a growing number of international airlines are partnering with CSC to get their online booking goals off the ground.
Recently, CSC applied experience in Internet booking technology to provide a solution for Spanair, the second largest air carrier in Spain. The goal was to meet the airline's business needs from a functional, user interface and cost effectiveness perspective by implementing eBooking, CSC's newest Internet booking engine.
Built by CSC Airline Solutions on leading edge Microsoft.NET technology, eBooking offers greater simplicity in the booking process for travelers and a host of benefits for Spanair. "Significant increases in Internet booking volumes and reduced cost of booking through the Internet are key results of the deployment of this new technology," says Michael Carey, marketing manager for CSC Airline Solutions, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. "Now, Spanair doesn't have to fit their needs into a specific model because eBooking allows them the flexibility to re-configure their parameters without the necessity of more coding."
The eBooking engine is delivered on an application service provider (ASP) basis for Spanair in which Internet booking services are purchased per transaction. In this model, Spanair can configure and administer the service in real time from any site around the world using Web-based online administration tools.
A platform for change
Headquartered on the island of Majorca, Spanair continues to expand throughout the world with possible campaigns on the horizon to accommodate more languages and drive additional bookings to its online channel.
In an effort to prevent slow response times, CSC also worked closely with Spanair to revise the site's capabilities and provide additional flexibility when handling marketing campaigns, which can fluctuate booking rates as much as 200 percent. That has allowed Spanair to be competitive without sacrificing performance. "We can really help improve their market agility at a time of intense competition," Carey explains. "eBooking allows Spanair to be extremely fast in responding to campaigns offered by competitors."
To date, the results from this partnership have been exceptional. Just one month after Spanair.com relaunched with its eBooking technology, the number of online travel bookings registered more than 3,000 per day. Following its last promotion, roughly five months after launch, the airline celebrated more than 6,500 bookings in one day and recorded nearly 550 bookings in one hour.
Innovation made to order
When Spanair made the decision to transfer to eBooking, it had specific requirements, coupled with government regulations that required a customized platform. CSC built a Spanair-specific module that connected to the existing platform. It only took a few months to accomplish and still allowed Spanair to launch its new site within the desired timeframe.
"We really see Airline Solutions as a dynamic team, ready to innovate and change things fast," adds Pablo Sanchez, distribution manager for Spanair. "We really liked the ambitiousness of this team from the very beginning."
The airline also liked eBooking's calendar function, which displays the lowest fares available for each day of a selected month. The Internet engine provides an easy-to-navigate format and links directly into Spanair's inventory to help reduce costs by cutting out intermediaries.
"We are committed to improve the ease with which travelers can book their travel with us using the Internet and we have worked closely with CSC to build a solution that fits our needs and the needs of our customers," Sanchez says. "We expect that the excellent results achieved already are a sign of even better things to come for both us and our customers."
