In hospitals, quick decisions can make the difference between life and death. For Centro Médico El Carmen, which specializes in heart care, fast access to patient information is especially crucial, and a CSC system is helping the hospital better serve its patients.
Located in Ourense, a midsize city in northwestern Spain, Centro Médico El Carmen wanted an information system that could provide a holistic view of patient records and health histories. The hospital chose CSC’s xHIS, a global information system that enables health organizations to attain maximum efficiency and quality in their services.
Improving quality of care
Marcos Magallanes, director of Information Systems at Centro Médico El Carmen, says, “Our main objectives are to improve the quality of patient care. Everything we do and all of the investments we make are always working toward this goal, in addition to improving our internal processes, but above all, we want to improve patient care.”
New coordinated care models demand an integrated approach to patient information management. Systems must be able to handle disparate data sources and be able to deliver real-time patient information so healthcare professionals can make well-informed decisions on the fly.
Meeting the specific needs of Centro Médico El Carmen is CSC’s xHIS electronic patient information system, which provides holistic care-delivery management, with the patient at the center. The paperless, modular system provides the flexibility and cost savings hospitals need.
For Magallanes, rock-solid security is a top requirement, and xHIS fits the bill. “We chose to work with CSC mainly because it is a company that delivered the most security in relation to what we wanted to do in our organization. In addition, xHIS was a very robust product, and it gave us security when it came time to act on all the future investments we wanted to make.”
One significant benefit of xHIS is that is built on open standards and is interoperable with a wide range of systems, protocols and terminology code sets. Magallanes says this makes it easy to integrate his hospital’s information with other systems and databases.
Fast access to crucial information
More specifically, the xHIS system is designed to help reduce clinical errors by centralizing clinical and management records while automating repetitive tasks. xHIS covers the complete patient care continuum, from acute to primary and preventive care, and supports multiple healthcare organizational models.
For healthcare professionals working in a hospital, xHIS provides a highly intuitive interface with advantages such as a general view of the set of basic functions and versatility in accessing different options. Users can get immediate access to all information required on one screen by just clicking on a corresponding link.
As a hospital specializing in battling cardiovascular disease, having direct access to patient information at all times from any location is a necessity. Magallanes says, “If a patient is admitted, wherever that may be, in the emergency room or in an ambulance, we have completely drawn information in a way that allows us to know, at each moment, where the patient is, what [he or she is] doing and what is needed.”
He adds, “The main success with our tools would be having all of the data with regard to patient care drawn, practically, from the first instant.” Other benefits include having all at-home medications and hospital medications managed electronically, at the single-pill level. Magallanes says, “We know, at each moment, what medication a patient should be taking, how [he or she] should be taking it and what repercussions this may have on the patient. That is very important for us.”
Magallanes says, “CSC adds value in our company in many respects. The value CSC provides gives us the confidence we need to commit to certain things because many times we want to do a project that affects a certain area, and we ask CSC [personnel] and they advise us how to commit to better investments. That value is extremely important.”
With a robust, effective patient information system firmly in place, Centro Médico El Carmen is investing in mobile technologies. Magallanes says, “With these investments, we need to constantly have a dialogue with CSC because, we, let’s say, have an idea, but they give us the most important part: the technology. And they help us execute these projects and the ideas we have in our heads, which aren’t few, to be sure.”
Other successes have shown up on the business side. Magallanes says, “Because all of our internal processes are better managed, our billings, of course, have increased. Virtually all of our internal processes have been totally improved. The return on investment is constant, continuous and on time.”
“CSC contributes, above all, security and confidence in what we want to do,” Magallanes concludes.
