For Aviva France, part of the world's seventh largest insurance group, a series of formative mergers between 1994 and 2000 presented practical problems of integrating disparate policy administration systems on an efficient and cost-effective platform with capacity for future business growth.

Scaleable Solution to Handle Growth

Initially, in 1993, Commercial Union's subsidiary Epargne de France purchased CSC's GraphTalk A.I.A as a replacement for its legacy life policy administration system. Then, as the subsequent mergers happened, the new group evaluated GraphTalk A.I.A on two occasions against alternatives, and decided that the CSC solution best met its requirements. A final independent benchmark test in 2000 simulated a system with 1.5 million contracts and 400 simultaneous users to confirm that GraphTalk A.I.A could handle the group's projected growth in business volumes.

Ease of Integration

As well as handling future business volumes, GraphTalk A.I.A enabled the group rapidly and successfully to integrate the systems it had adopted from its merged companies. Development and maintenance were also less resource intensive. When the group moved to the latest version of CSC's GraphTalk development tool, it saved 40%-60% in batch processing times.

Laurent Grard, IT Director at Abeille Vie (now part of Aviva France), says; "The migration proved to be relatively easy and we achieved a more uniform and consistent outcome than we would have done using conventional systems."

CSC's New Tools

Aviva France is now looking to CSC to help it upgrade its version of GraphTalk A.I.A.

Hugues du Jeu, Operations Director at Abeille Vie, says: "Our version of GraphTalk A.I.A has been modified several times and bears little resemblance to the current CSC version that includes many new features. While we have integrated some of these, for example Internet connectivity, with little difficulty, others are not compatible with some of the changes we have made. We hope that CSC's newest tools will enable us to manage the differences and integrate new functions with ease."
