Tour of California Stage 4 Highlights

*Team CSC attacked throughout the day but had no effect on the standings; Floyd Landis remains in first place overall with David Zabriskie and Bobby Julich of Team CSC in the standings.

*Stage 4, the Tour’s longest stage, ran from Monterey south to San Luis Obispo. Riders passed through some of California’s most spectacular scenery, taking Highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean through the Big Sur region.

*CSC’s Lars Bak was a major animator of the stage, participating in breakaways for roughly 40 miles, earning him the Most Aggressive Rider jersey.

*CSC set up Stuart O’Grady for a sprint but the winner was Toyota United Pro’s Juan Jose Haedo, for his second stage win of the race.

*There will be TV coverage tonight on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m. Pacific time (1 hour).

*Stage 5 is San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara. The race will wind along the central coast and has a sprint in the city of Guadalupe and then heads east to the Santa Ynez Mountains via the Solvang area. The riders will then face a four-mile Category One climb to San Marcos Pass before descending to a beachfront finish in Santa Barbara.

Tour of California Stage 3 Highlights

* Team CSC captures two-thirds of the podium in today’s 17-mile individual time trial, which ran outside of San José along the Chesbro and Calero Reservoirs.

*Floyd Landis, the captain of Phonak, finished first to retain his overall lead, 26 seconds faster than David Zabriskie. Bobby Julich finished nine seconds slower than his teammate for third place.

*Today showcased the time trial strength of CSC. Seven of the top 16 riders wore CSC jerseys. At one point CSC held the top four spots with Fabian Cancellara, Stuart O’Grady, Lars Bak and Jens Voigt, with Cancellara holding onto the best time until nearly the end of the race. Cancellara finished sixth in the stage.

*Stage 4, the 130.9-mile “Queen Stage,“ is the Tour’s longest stage. Riders will face six hours of consistently hilly and technical terrain passing through Big Sur, past Hearst Castle and inland toward the finish at San Luis Obispo.

BOBBY’S BLOG: Tour of California, Stage 3

On why time trials are such an important part of the overall race:

“They really separate everyone from each other because when you come in a sprint finish everyday when you’re not a sprinter you’re losing five or 10 seconds a day because of the time bonuses. So the time trial is really where you have to make your mark in the race overall.“

On the reception from the people of San Jose:

“The reception in San Jose and every other city we’ve been in has been fantastic. It’s been a lot of fun and I’m really happy to be a part of the first ever Tour of California.“

On the importance of a crowd to a cyclist’s performance:

“Absolutely, we are social creatures and when you’re acknowledged it’s nice. When your friends and family are around and people enjoy and respect what you do for a living it makes a big difference.“

On the difference between preparing for an individual time trial versus a stage race:

“Individual time trials are a lot more difficult. It’s a lot shorter so you have to make sure to warm up enough, but not too much and then to focus for the 40 minutes or so that it takes to complete the race.“

On taking on tomorrow’s challenging climbs through Big Sur:

“It’s maybe not such a bad thing that we’re sitting in second and third position right now because if we did have the jersey it would be a very long day. So although we lost time today that will be difficult to get back, it also makes it a little easier for us to be in an attacking mode than a defensive mode like Floyd Landis has to be in the next few days.“
