Wouldn’t you know it!? Just as this blog note was being posted, Amazon officially launched its Amazon MP3 music store. (http://money.cnn.com/2007/09/25/technology/bc.amazon.musicstore2.ap/index.htm) As the name implies, Amazon will deliver all of its music downloads without rights restrictions. While Amazon touts 2.3 million tunes at prices between 89 cents and 99 cents (I wonder what the 10-cent difference is for?), it’s not clear just how comprehensive the catalogue of music offerings really is. Other sites that offer DRM-free music (e.g., EMusic.com) do not offer artists on major music labels that still require DRM to prevent piracy. This is further evidence that digital trust technology in the form of DRM is still alive and useful to create value, but other digital trust means of generating fair value for fair use are being pursued.
