CSC congratulates Carlos Sastre and his teammates on his exciting victory at the Tour de France. The achievement also marks CSC’s second donation of 3,000 Euro to Velokhaya, a CSC-led fundraising and awareness campaign for South Africa’s Life Cycling Academy.
The Velokhaya initiative was launched at the 2007 Tour de France at CSC’s European headquarters in Aldershot, England. Since then, founding international partners CSC, Team CSC Saxo Bank and Cervelo have helped Velokhaya raise funds and advance its efforts to build a world-class youth development and cycling training facility in the community of Khayelistsha in South Africa. In addition to a donation for each Team CSC Saxo Bank stage win, CSC and Cervelo are sponsoring the online auction of three, one-of-a-kind Cervelo bikes on eBay. All proceeds from the auction benefit Velokhaya. Bidding on the three CSC bikes—each with a unique, never-to-be-repeated commemorative paint job—closes at approximately 7 a.m. EDT on July 29. Learn more about the eBay auction items by visiting /cycling/auction. To learn more about the organization, visit http://www.velokhaya.com/.

At CSC India, we consistently work toward integrating corporate social responsibility (CSR) into the values, culture, operations and business decisions at all levels of the organization. Our constant endeavor is to bring a positive change to the underprivileged communities by supporting a wide range of socio-economic, educational and health initiatives.
Though the employees volunteer to participate, the CSR initiatives are triggered and executed by the Social Services Committee (SSC), the philanthropic arm of CSC in India. The Social Services Committee at CSC India acts as the torchbearer for all our socially responsible activities and manages the CSR initiatives across locations.
The objectives of the committee are to:
Help the lesser-privileged sections of the society through long-term sustainable and measurable initiatives
Participate in national, international, governmental and NGO initiatives
Support people affected by natural calamities and disasters
- Offer a platform to employees where they can give back to the society in a meaningful way
Recently in Indore, CSC collaborated with a government school to provide IT education for students. This program covers the basics of computers, Microsoft Office, hardware, the Internet and software programming languages. CSC provided computers and books to the students. In addition, CSC hosted the students during a visit to the Indore office, where students were given a tour and participated in a special class.
A strong promoter of basic and primary education, CSC India has adopted educational institutions to enhance their education standards and equip them with better infrastructure facilities. The organization has adopted schools in tribal villages and slum areas, and sponsored funds for school building, teachers’ salaries, books, school uniforms, computers and other study materials. Computer training is provided to the teachers and primary school children on a continuous basis. CSC India uses IT as an instrument for social development and promoting computer literacy. Many computers have also been donated to government schools and schools in rural remote areas.

CSC’s CENR Group supports some of the world’s leading chemical and energy companies. Its employees also support numerous charities across the United States, donating time and money to help their communities. Children are a special focus, according to Susan Sargent, CSC’s senior marketing manager for CENR:
“We believe in supporting the community, and our employees have done an outstanding job of showing their community spirit. We support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF); employees in three regions united for the cause and generated a total of nearly $72,000 in research donations by participating in multiple JDRF Walks for the Cure in the autumn of 2007.
Last year, CENR employees supporting CSC’s Newmont account in Denver participated in the event for the first time. Nine walkers led by four CSC employee captains generated $500 in donations and joined 4,000 others for the JDRF Walk in September.
CENR employees in the Houston region also made a strong showing in their first walk. CSC employees from the Houston Consulting Group, BHP North America and Shell accounts teamed up to meet the goal. The CSC captains got 122 walkers to participate, generating approximately $14,000 in donations.
Delaware-area CENR employees, who have participated in the walk for four years in a row, achieved an ambitious goal: to beat the prior year’s fundraising results. Combined with CENR matching funds, and donations from walkers, the total raised was $57,409—beating the previous year’s donation total of $43,757. JDRF recognized the effort by honoring our Delaware team with the award for Largest Corporate Fundraiser for the third year in a row. The team was also presented with the award for best T-shirt, designed by CSC’s P2 group. (Thanks in part to CSC’s support, the Delaware JDRF Walk raised a total of $480,000 overall in 2007.)
We’re gearing up for the 2008 Walks for the Cure, and we’re looking to grow our support across CENR regions to raise even more donations. But our work goes beyond JDRF. Other charities we support include Disability Mentoring, Junior Achievement, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ronald McDonald House and more. CSC employees are generous givers of time and talent, as well as money. There is a lot to be proud of!”

The Meningitis Trust is the UK’s longest established meningitis charity. It helps approximately 20,000 people each year through its range of specialist services, giving vital support to those who have been affected by this disease. CSC’s Jonathan Davies, who survived a life-altering case of meningitis, is competing in six (yes, six!) triathlons this year to raise money for the charity.
“2008 is the sixth anniversary of my surviving a near fatal attack of viral meningitis, which has had a lasting impression on my life. To celebrate another year of having survived this illness, I am running triathlons to raise money for the Meningitis Trust. They do so much to help people affected by meningitis, both those that suffer the disease and those that are bereaved as a result of an attack. Supported entirely by donations, the Trust runs round-the-clock services and, without support, wouldn’t be able to do this.
This year, I am doing six triathlons in six months to celebrate six years since I contracted this disease and, in doing so, supporting the Meningitis Trust in their invaluable work. The six triathlons this year include the biggest in the world in London, as well as Wattisham, Walden, Norwich, Culford, Clacton (sea swim and off-road bike course) and Bedford in October. Bedford in particular is tough, since getting out of a swimming pool in October and straight onto a bike at 7.30 a.m. is not for the faint hearted or those prone to hypothermia!
To learn more and donate to my charity, please visit www.justgiving.com/meningitis-tri-2008. Many thanks for your support!“

The CSC Atlanta community assisted local National Public Radio (NPR) station WABE 90.1 FM with their Spring Membership Campaign on April 29. Membership campaigns are periods during the calendar year that WABE breaks away from regular programming to ask listeners for their financial support to keep public broadcasting operating and available to the public.
The Atlanta office, coordinated by Chase Crowson of CSC’s Global Outsourcing Services (GOS), provided 10 volunteers. Chase notes, “It was somewhat serendipitous that this event followed just days after Team CSC’s great finish in the Tour de Georgia and coincided with the airing of Carrier on PBS stations, presented by CSC.”
This volunteer opportunity was of vital importance to public radio in the metro Atlanta area, and it provided CSC Atlanta community members from several different divisions with an opportunity to network with one another and to become more involved in community affairs. In one shift, CSC volunteers were able to raise $13,809 in pledges.
Participating CSC volunteers included:
Mark Baade, NPS, Information Technology Infrastructure Services
Chase Crowson, GOS, Global Solutions & Technology - Collaborative Market Solutions
Michael Donnelly, NPS, Government Health Services – CDC
Philip Dreger, GBS, Telecommunications Industries
Nyda Faith, GBS, SAP National Service Lines
Scott Mackay, GBS, National Service Lines – Software Services
Sumesh Sundareswaran, NPS, Government Health Services – CDC
Michael Trettel, NPS, Government Health Services – CDC
Barbara Williams, GBS, National Operations Management - Recruiting
- Cathea Woodley, GBS, National Operations Management – Development & Learning
