DVC Interns Gain Valuable On-the-Job Experience

While many of their peers were waiting tables or working as lifeguards, a small group of college students spent the summer of 2007 auditing vaccine manufacturing batch records, assisting with official communications to the FDA, drafting Standard Operating Procedures, designing marketing materials and assembling new business proposals. These three young go-getters were summer interns at DynPort Vaccine Company (DVC) in Frederick, Md.

DVC building with US and Maryland flagsDVC’s summer interns this year were Kyle Myers, Regulatory and Clinical Operations Intern from Penn State; Nary Kim, Manufacturing, Testing and Technical Services Intern from James Madison University; and Kristin O’Toole, New Business and Communications Intern, from McDaniel College. Nary and Kyle plan to focus on the life sciences, while Kristin is pursuing a communications degree.

All rising juniors, the interns each gained valuable business and life experience this summer; all said these were things “you just can’t learn in school.” In addition to gaining practical experience in their respective areas of interest and the biotechnology business, the interns also gained essential professional experience this summer. Kyle cited his acclimatization to a business atmosphere as a major benefit of his experience at DVC, while Nary and Kristin said working as part of a team and interacting with others were their most valuable experiences.

“My internship at DVC has taught me to be at ease working in a professional environment,” said Kristin. “Meeting deadlines, interacting with co-workers and becoming comfortable with learning new programs are some of the aspects that will be beneficial to my future career.”

DVC is a wholly owned subsidiary of CSC (CSC), and is part of CSC’s North American Public Sector (NPS). DVC’s interns also participated in the larger NPS summer intern program, and were able to attend various workshops and training sessions, including seminars in business writing and transitioning from college to work, with other CSC interns and managers.

On August 15, 2007, DVC recognized its three interns with a special luncheon hosted by DVC President and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Robert V. House. The interns were each presented with a certificate signed by Dr. House and their supervisors and care packages filled with back-to-school and “study break” items. At least two are planning to return to DVC to work during winter break.

DVC plans to expand its intern program in 2008 to include additional functional areas. For further information or to apply, check the DVC Web site in early 2008 for details, or register for our intern e-mail list and we'll contact you when more information is available.
