Q: When does a workday at DVC involve lava lamps, “mug shots” and edible DNA?
A: Take your child to work day!
On April 24, 2008, nine members of the extended DVC family came to work with their parents. The children, second through eighth graders, started the day with fingerprints and photos, which were presented to parents as part of a child identification kit. Then the kids learned about viruses, bacteria and vaccines from DVC senior scientist “Dr. Mark,” and got a closer look at some bugs under the microscope.
Other DVC staff members from the New Business, Finance, Quality and Program Management departments helped the young guests make two experiments: a lava lamp and a “DNA” strand made from colorful marshmallows. Activities wrapped up with a pizza lunch. Each child took home a certificate, a goodie bag, and—hopefully—a better idea of what Mom or Dad does all day at work.
“Today was fun-filled and exciting because I got to go to work with my mom,” said Brittany, a 13-year-old eighth grader and daughter of Document Control Supervisor Shelly. “I found out what she does and it was very interesting. I learned about different types of bacteria, including E. coli, staph, salmonella and streptococcus [which causes] strep throat and ear infection.”
Fourth grader Cassandra learned that “bacteria and viruses are used as weapons against the soldiers, and that DVC is working on antibodies to fight these diseases and protect the soldiers.” Cassandra, who will be 10 years old in September, is an aspiring scientist. In addition to participating in hands-on activities, Cassandra helped her mom Sharon, a financial analyst, update some graphs and policies during the day. “The events of this day have inspired me so much that I hope to become a scientist someday,” said Cassandra.
Events for the day were sponsored by the DVC social committee, who contribute to DVC’s fun, family friendly atmosphere by hosting imaginative events. Volunteers organize themed events at least monthly throughout the year. Recent events include a Leap Year luncheon (held every four years), a March Madness luncheon, an Administrative Professionals Day ice cream social, and a Cinco de Mayo taco lunch, to name just a few.
Special thanks to Krista, age 13, for her assistance photographing other participants.
