DVC Gains Perspective by Participating in Operation Christmas Child
November 13, 2008 was a record day for employees of DynPort Vaccine Company LLC (DVC). On this day many employees took part in filling, wrapping and shipping 135 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, a Samaritan’s Purse project. The 135 shoeboxes for 2008 far surpassed the previous record of 88 shoeboxes. These gifts will be delivered to children in impoverished and war-torn countries.
This year marks DVC’s sixth year of participation in Operation Christmas Child. This event was started at DVC in 2003 by DVC scientist Dr. Don Fine. This has now become one of several charity events that DVC participates in annually. Efforts this year were managed by DVC staff member Susan Taylor of DVC’s Manufacturing, Testing and Technical Services department.
Employees volunteered to wrap shoeboxes with colorful wrapping paper while other employees stuffed the boxes with many donated goodies, including toys, toiletries, candy and much more.
For more than 35 years, Samaritan's Purse has provided aid to the world's poor, sick, and suffering. Operation Christmas Child was created in 1993 by Samaritan’s Purse to bring hope and joy to needy children around the world during the holiday season. Operation Christmas Child has provided children a chance to understand what a holiday season is all about. The national collection for the program ended November 24, but shoeboxes can be sent year- round to the processing center in Boone, North Carolina. Boone is one of five OCC processing centers in the United States.
This holiday season 8 million shoeboxes will be shipped out internationally. When asked what she thought about the Operation Christmas Child and DVC’s participation, Susan Taylor noted, “Many children will be smiling this Christmas because of what was accomplished."
