An assessment of health status among medical research volunteers who served in the Project Whitecoat program at Fort Detrick, Maryland Between 1954 and 1973, more than 2000 men entering military service as conscientious objectors participated in Project Whitecoat as medical research volunteers for the Army's biological warfare defense program. An assessment of self-reported, current health status among 358 "exposed" individuals and 164 unexposed control subjects found no conclusive evidence that receipt of investigational agents was related to adverse health outcomes.

Biological activity of an intravenous preparation of human vaccinia immune globulin in mouse models of vaccinia virus infection The biological activity of a new intravenous (IV) preparation of human vaccinia immune globulin (VIGIV) was evaluated in two mouse models of vaccinia virus (VV) infection. The timing of treatment relative to VV inoculation appeared to be important for the demonstration of VIGIV's biological activity.
Cell-Mediated Immune Response Following Vaccination of Rhesus Macaques with Francisella tularensis Live Vaccine Strain and Challenge with SCHU S4 Francisella tularensis (F. tularensis) is currently listed as a category A agent due to its potential risk for use as a biological weapon. The low natural incidence of tularemia may require licensure of medical countermeasures via the U. S. Food and Drug Administration’s Animal Efficacy Rule. Challenges Facing Sponsors Seeking Licensure of Vaccines Using the Animal Rule No vaccine has yet been licensed using the Animal Rule. This regulatory approach still requires Sponsors to meet the manufacturing, quality, preclinical and clinical standards required under more traditional pathways to licensure. Licensure using animal models still poses the risk that the vaccine(s) may not work as intended in humans, thus efficacy testing using the Animal Rule could present a more complicated path to licensure than the more traditional route of efficacy testing in humans.
Characterization of a Bioaerosol Inhalation Testing System for Aerosol Delivery of Francisella tularensis SCHU S4 to Rabbits Francisella tularensis, the etiologic agent of tularemia, is currently listed as a category A agent as aerosols of F. tularensis are highly infectious in humans. The objective of this study was to characterize the MRI Bioaerosol Inhalation Testing System (BITS) for aerosol delivery of F. tularensis (SCHU S4). Determining the BITS performance characteristics was an essential prerequisite for the development of a rabbit model for inhalational tularemia.
