CSC’s Global CIO Survey 2014-2015, the company’s sixth annual report (formerly “CIO Barometer ”), reports on CIOs’ priorities for the year and the IT plans they’ve made to address their biggest challenges. Once again, cybersecurity ranked top of mind – in initiatives, investment, and impact on business and productivity.
Respondents to CSC's Global CIO Survey 2014-2015 ranked “Elevated IT Security Expectations” as a “critical” or “high priority,” at 82%. By sector, Financial Services respondents ranked cybersecurity, at 91%, leading all other sectors, followed by Manufacturing, at 86%, and Retail/Tech/Media, at 85%. Overall, only 1% of respondents reported that security is “not a priority.”
By region, Asia Pacific CIOs lead the pack, with 85% reporting security as a priority, followed by European and North America CIOs, at 82% and 78%, respectively. However, when asked about investing in top technology initiatives, respondents from Asia Pacific and Europe tied, each at 74%, reporting they are “investing heavily” in security, with North American CIOs trailing in third place, at 60%. Overall, all respondents reported that they are investing the most heavily in security, compared to other areas.
By sector, Financial Services CIOs again reported the highest numbers, with 57% responding that they are investing heavily in security, followed by Healthcare, at 52%, and Manufacturing, at 47%. Only 3% of all respondents report they are not “doing very much in this area.”
When asked how technology initiatives are impacting their businesses, 51% of CIOs responded that they use cybersecurity as a “strategic asset” to drive their business forward, second only to their strategic use of analytics and big data, at 54%. Fewer respondents, 43%, said they use cybersecurity as a tool to help them “maintain their business” and “keep the lights on.”
