Green IT: It's a Go at the EPA
Client:
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)Challenge:
- Maintain role of environmental stewardship.
Solution:
- Consolidation of servers across EPA's 13 laboratories, and implementation of Green IT solutions at the desktop.
Results:
- Server virtualization and advanced management technologies for server consolidation, and a full-life-cycle Green IT program for EPA's many PCs and printers, resulting in significant cost and energy savings
- Reduced energy consumption for desktops/laptops/monitors will be approximately 77.6 million kilowatt hours.
- Reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 64,000 tons over eight years.
The EPA takes its role of environmental stewardship very seriously. Not only is the agency leading the nation’s environmental science, research, education and assessment efforts, but it is also a leader in environmentally responsible computing. With the help of CSC and our groundbreaking Green IT strategies, the EPA has been improving energy efficiency, reducing costs and decreasing its carbon footprint.
CSC is working with the EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) to consolidate servers across its 13 laboratories. By employing server virtualization and advanced management technologies, the ORD has been able to reduce the number of servers by more than 60% and save an estimated $394,000 per year in energy costs.
Going Green at the desktop
The EPA is also going Green at the desktop. From purchase to asset recovery, CSC is helping the EPA’s Customer Technology Service employ a full-life-cycle Green IT program for its many PCs and printers. By active technology management, device standardization and service consolidation, CSC is helping the EPA achieve significant cost and energy savings.
Significant savings
Over the life of the contract, the reduced energy consumption for desktops/laptops/monitors will be approximately 77.6 million kilowatt hours. This represents a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 64,000 tons over eight years. That’s the equivalent of removing 11,000 cars from the road, saving 6.8 million gallons of gasoline and eliminating the electricity usage of 8,000 homes.
