Promoting Wellness, Step by Step
We improve access to exercise and wellness activities that strengthen the mind and body to help our global team get fit, stay active and achieve even more.
The CSC Global Get Fit Challenge This year, participation in our cornerstone employee wellness and exercise program grew four-fold with the addition of 1,000 new participants and 60 new teams from our workforce in the United States, the UK, India, Vietnam, Australia and other countries. In cities around the world, we exercised individually and on group outings, reporting results as step units and sharing support and advice through our corporate social-media environment. This friendly competition helped participants elevate fitness, lose weight, lower blood pressure and improve overall health through a variety of exercise activities.
The CSC Global Get Fit Challenge improved employee access to exercise and wellness opportunities while building teamwork and engagement and supporting a culture of achievement across our workforce. Through our active involvement in this and other wellness and nutrition programs, CSC earned recognition from the American Heart Association as a 2012 Gold Level Fit-Friendly Company.
Learn and Develop, Create and Collaborate
We expand access to programs that help employees and STEM students improve their knowledge of technology, business and leadership, to develop both their talents and their careers.
Training Available in 15 Languages — Anytime, Anywhere
To deepen our business and technology expertise, employees accessed millions of hours of training this year through many learning and certification venues, including our 24x7 online learning center, CSC Learning Place. With a personalized format, quick navigation and a powerful search engine, this award-winning resource offers over 3,000 courses, over 200 certification exams, more than 20,000 digitized books, hundreds of videos and short clips on a variety of topics and more — approximately 50,000 hours of training available anytime, anywhere, in 15 languages.
Learn at Work
For the fourth straight year, we organized a variety of Learn at Work Day activities to raise awareness about the learning tools, resources and methods available to our employees. Often conducted together with CSC training associates such as SkillSoft and Redtray, this year’s events included pilots of live online learning programs as well as training in cloud computing technologies and change management best practices.
Diverse Horizons, Common Future
We harness the energy and creativity of our diverse global team and supplier base to foster innovation, promote inclusion and opportunity, and unite for the greatest possible impact and achievement.
Strength in Diversity, Globally
Around the world, we recognize and draw strength from the tremendous diversity of the CSC team. In India, our Sensitization, Engagement, Empowerment and Development (SEED) initiative focuses on supporting gender diversity and promoting the development of women employees through mentoring and training. We developed the EDGE Diversity and Inclusion Program to increase awareness within our Managed Services Sector business unit of the importance of diversity as a key business driver. And employees and their families in India, the United States and many other countries made time to celebrate Diwali this year with fireworks displays, the sharing of homemade treats and a special Diwali lunch featuring vegetarian dishes at our U.S. corporate headquarters.
Created By Employees, For Employees
To enhance our Employee Resource Groups — global and regional forums that bring together employees with similar professional interests — we implemented a mentorship program this year to support employee development. Our Employee Resource Groups include the following:
- Authentic Leadership helps employees discover their sense of purpose, act in ways that align with their core values and behaviors and achieve their goals as leaders and team members.
- CSC Black Employee Network (BEN) advances cultural diversity, professional development, and personal and professional growth through leadership and education, while affording opportunities for community outreach. This year BEN sponsored, among other events, a Black History Month program featuring a presentation by Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, civil rights youth activist and the distinguished President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), about STEM in higher education and other topics.
- CSC Abilities First Network encourages members of the CSC disability community and allies to network, share disability-related information and create awareness about the talents and contributions of CSC employees with disabilities and their families. This year CSC was recognized in Profiles in Diversity Journal for the success of our disability and inclusion programs.
- CSC Asian and Pacific Islander Network (CAPIN) enables the professional successes of members, strengthens CSC’s regional capabilities i
n high-growth Asia-Pacific markets and shares knowledge with similar external organizations. This year CAPIN coordinated CSC’s sponsorship of an event held by the Asian American Leadership, Empowerment and Development organization, which creates programs to support Asian-American youth. - CSC Young Professional Resource Group fosters a collaborative environment to aid the professional development of younger employees. Goals include facilitating full-time employment transitions and raising awareness about generational diversity at CSC. This year the group created a mentorship program for CSC summer interns.
- CSC Gays, Lesbians and Everyone Else (GLEE) promotes awareness about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, provides a forum for employees to network, and engages in outreach activities that reinforce CSC’s standing as an LGBT-friendly organization. This year GLEE’s executive sponsor provided thought leadership in the media about LGBT issues in the workplace.
- CSC Hispanic Network advocates cultural appreciation and offers networking opportunities for CSC’s Hispanic community. Members are encouraged to volunteer and take advantage of cultural experiences within their respective regions. In 2012 CSC Hispanic Network executive sponsor Jose Jimenez was named Chief Diversity Officer of the Year by the Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association (LISTA).
- Women in Leadership is dedicated to attracting, retaining and motivating women with deep industry experience and broad perspective, to support our increasingly global and diverse client base. On International Women’s Day this year, employees celebrated the achievements and contributions of women with a live video webcast of a panel of distinguished women leaders discussing empowerment.
Opportunity, Expanded Greater inclusiveness leads to more effective hiring practices and a stronger global workforce. By adopting our version of the Rooney Rule — which requires National Football League teams to interview minority coach candidates — we expanded opportunities for historically underrepresented groups in hiring searches for directors and vice presidents and reduced the likelihood that qualified candidates would be overlooked.
Service to Those Who Serve Through our military recruitment program, we reached out to wounded warriors by participating in the Hiring Heroes and Wounded Warrior Regiment Career Fairs and by partnering with the Warriors to Work program. In addition, we are still one of the few organizations to provide transitional support to active military personnel. Our work with the National Military Spouse Network, the Military Spouse Employment Program and Blue Star Families also helps military spouses realize their professional goals.
Conclusion
Whether it’s supporting wellness to improve employee health; promoting workforce diversity to keep pace with the diversity of our client base; ensuring opportunities to network, learn and grow; or recruiting or hiring veterans and their families, we measure the success of our employee initiatives in the promises we keep, the results we deliver and the progress we achieve, together.
