Progress
In the face of serious fiscal and macroeconomic headwinds this year, we achieved significant progress in our social and environmental performance. Corporate responsibility (CR) strategically ties the expansive interests of our company with community engagement, employee wellbeing, environmental sustainability, client collaboration and ethical governance. Our CR framework organizes our continued commitment to act responsibly. We are proud to share with you our accomplishments in CR, which were achieved by our global team.
A few highlights from the year
Community. We expanded CSC Gives Back, our community investment program, through a collaboration with ChildFund International, connecting employee teams globally to support impoverished children. In addition, we launched a collaboration with the nonprofit NPower to use the organization’s Community Corps
program, which matches employee IT skills to nonprofit needs. We strive to make powerful, tangible differences in the communities in which we live and work.
Employees. We successfully launched our Global Get Fit Challenge, which involved more than 1,000 employees forming global teams to track and increase their physical activity. We know we are only as strong as the dedicated employees who form our company, and we encourage healthy living as a result.
Clients. By leveraging our CR efforts to include our clients, we responded this year to more client requests for sustainability support, thereby strengthening the foundations of trust we create with the organizations we serve. We are committed to practices that build our client relationships for long-term viability and sustainability.
Environment. We expanded our greenhouse gas emissions reporting to 45% more sites and completed our third global submission of the Carbon Disclosure Project. We are confident that improving measurement and transparency in our emissions is an integral step in reducing them.
Governance, Measurement and Reporting. The promotion of a corporate culture of ethics and compliance has been enhanced by the newly appointed Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, who reports directly to the Audit Committee of the CSC Board of Directors. This demonstrates our commitment to programs to prevent and detect organizational misconduct.
Transparency
In our continuing effort to enhance transparency and accountability, we created detailed policy statements to guide our management, employees, stakeholders and vendors on CSC’s ethical and business principles in key areas such as environmental sustainability, health and safety, human rights and responsible supply chain practices. These policy statements represent a further step in our CR progress.
Recognitions
As a result of this progress, we received a series of awards and recognitions for our CR efforts this year, including:
Business in the Community Gold Ranking. Business in the Community (BITC) is an international network of responsible businesses committed to a sustainable future for people and the planet. As a BITC member, CSC is committed to advancing responsible business practices that benefit society. BITC recognized our CR achievements in the UK by presenting us with a Gold performance band — a continued improvement from our Silver performance last year, and Bronze award the year before.
FTSE4Good Index Series. We were recognized for a third consecutive year by the FTSE4Good Index Series, which honors companies for their CR standards. We received high rankings in environmental management and the development of strategies to allocate and conserve resources.
American Heart Association Fit-Friendly Company. CSC was recognized with Gold Level Achievement for our dedication to employee health and wellness. The American Heart Association (AHA) qualifying criteria identified wellness through promoting physical activity, providing nutritious food options and integrating health into corporate culture.
CR Magazine Best Corporate Citizens in Government Contracting. For the second year in a row, CSC was named one of the Top 10 companies for performance as a Corporate Citizen in Government Contracting for 2012 by CR Magazine.
