CSC UK Achieves Gold Standard in Carbon Reduction Efforts
CSC continues to gain recognition for our continuing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.
CSC UK has achieved the Carbon Saver Gold Standard award for reducing carbon emissions in our CSC UK operations. As part of a long-term program, CSC has demonstrated a wide range of carbon saving initiatives implemented across all of our buildings in the UK.
The Carbon Saver Standard is an independently administered program that rewards organizations for their carbon reduction efforts. The Gold-level standard requires a comprehensive audit and site visits to verify carbon reduction. The Carbon Saver Standard qualifies as an Early Action Metric as part of the UK government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment program.
Andy Williams, CSC President UK, Nordics, Netherlands, Middle East & South Africa, says, “This means we've shown consistently good management and reduction of our carbon emissions over a three-year period, and a consistent, ongoing improvement in energy efficiency at our UK data centers.”
The Carbon Saver Gold Standard requires organizations to operate a robust set of policies and procedures and have accurate measurement and monitoring of all energy use. The standard can be achieved either through absolute emissions or by demonstration of improvement in efficiency against a relative metric.
For CSC’s accreditation, we were able to demonstrate an absolute reduction in office emissions along with ongoing improvement in energy efficiency. CSC scored an exceptionally high 95 percent in the qualitative element of the standard. Auditors comments included noting a “clear organizational and reporting structure,” and a “wide range of carbon saving initiatives” implemented across the CSC building portfolio.
CSC UK’s Carbon Management Program began in 2008. A number of aggressive initiatives have been undertaken, including designating facilities managers as carbon champions. In the first year of the program, CSC UK offices reduced energy consumption by 24 percent.
CSC utilizes state-of-the-art technology in our UK data centers, including high-density cube solutions and other innovative technologies. Among other energy-reducing practices are implementation of server virtualization, energy-efficient computer room design, and PIR-activated lighting in dark-room computer suites.
