CSC Ensures Secure Separation of Infrastructure and Applications for Magnox Electric
Client:
Magnox Electric LimitedChallenge:
- Separating Magnox Electric into the new Site License Companies entailed massive changes at many levels — including organization, processes, infrastructure and applications.
Solution:
- CSC consultants worked closely with Magnox Electric to define the project, work through the specification and carry out detailed costings, ensuring that business issues were clearly understood and translated into an appropriate technical implementation.
Results:
- The CSC solution has enabled Magnox North and Magnox South to operate as separate entities, each with its own network and support infrastructure. Thanks to end-to-end consultancy from CSC, the separation caused little or no disruption to the 5,000 end users.
Magnox Electric Limited was responsible for managing 10 of the UK’s civil nuclear sites on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), which owns the sites and is responsible for their decommissioning and clean-up. The NDA Magnox Electric to separate into two Site License Companies (SLCs) — Magnox North Limited and Magnox South Limited.
Depth of knowledge and experience
As a long-term outsourcing partner of Magnox Electric’s then parent company, BNFL, CSC was already managing the Magnox Electric infrastructure and most of its applications. Magnox Electric was therefore confident that CSC had the depth of knowledge and experienced personnel — both already on site and available on demand — to ensure successful separation of its infrastructure and applications.
In addition, the existing working relationship between the two companies enabled a fast start-up, shaving six months off project duration. CSC consultants worked closely with Magnox Electric to define the project, work through the specification and carry out detailed costings, ensuring that business issues were clearly understood and translated into an appropriate technical implementation.
Smooth transition
“Working in partnership with CSC, we smoothly transitioned into the new operational structure on schedule and to budget. The program of work also implemented a number of innovative solutions to address specific issues relating to aging infrastructure and systems,” says Ian Lewis, head of Information Technology, Magnox North Limited.
Thanks to end-to-end consultancy from CSC, and close working relationships with Magnox teams, the separation into Magnox North and Magnox South caused little or no disruption to the 5,000 end users.
