“Having graduated with a Masters in computer science I have been with CSC for one year and am working as a functional analyst for a national institution that deals with pensions.

"CSC has been tasked with the transformation of a web application into a .Net application. My role involves analyzing existing application screens and designing new screens that offer current functionality as well as enhancements. This involves thinking in a logical order to create a clear solution, I have learned how to analyze and design screens while on the job. I also attended the CEFA Academy at CSC; a course for beginner functional analysts. I enjoyed it so much I became involved with the CEFA community and am now involved in teaching and organizing the Academy.

“I work closely with the client and we hold regular workshops for feedback on designs, following which I make changes where necessary. I really enjoy my job because of the large amount of interaction I have with different people, asking the right questions and explaining the client’s needs to the developers, and vice versa. I am also responsible for several documents, including writing a functional document to be used by developers, a use case which explains what the application does, and a user guide that explains each screen’s functionality. These documents have to be kept up to date as changes to the application are made.

“An important part of a functional analyst’s role is testing. In the documentation I describe what a screen should look like and then test if the real screen reflects that. I also work closely with the client’s IT department who carry out more thorough tests; I am on hand to provide information and explanations. Part of my role is being a help desk, if the client has a problem with the application, I investigate whether it is the result of client error or there is a problem with the application. In the latter case, details are sent to our developers who fix it. I follow the issue until it has been solved. We are a team of 18 CSC consultants on this project. I also know a lot of other CSC colleagues thanks to events, communities and Knowledge Sharing Sessions. I am working with young colleagues on an internal project on social media analytics, which started as just the development of a paper, but has grown to include exploring potential business opportunities. I don’t know where it will lead, but it’ certainly enriching!

“I love working for CSC because I got a lot of responsibility from the start, but always knew there was support to fall back on. I also have the freedom to try new things and there are always new opportunities to learn. I intend to try different roles to see what I would like to do eventually; CSC has a lot of career perspectives for juniors with a lot of variety and I feel well guided in my career path.”
