When Speed Counts – Moving Into The Network’s Fast Lane

CSC and Riverbed overcome speed of light limitations for global mining giant’s IT network one of the largest resources companies in the world, with annual earnings in the billions and a presence in almost every continent on earth, wanted to consolidate its core operating system servers on a scale and size that had never previously been achieved within this industry sector- and challenged CSC to deliver.

The Challenge

Our customer’s global challenges required a unique solution to ensure the business objectives (cost savings without loss of functionality) could be met.

The core business system is one of the largest single instance SAP systems in the world with tens of thousands of users in more than 40 countries and any interruption to service would cost the company millions of dollars daily.

The Solution

Key to the solution was CSC’s partnership with Riverbed to overcome speed of light limitations.

The Riverbed Steelhead, paired with CSC’s design solution, addressed these issues and delivered cost savings, higher than expected service levels, a more stable environment and IT communications innovation that opened the door for other global entities to consolidate IT communications to an unprecedented level.

The Results

The success of this solution has enabled our customer to extend the consolidation of its systems far beyond the originally scoped SAP environment. It has made possible the closure of regional computer rooms, consolidated global applications and reduced more than 50 exchange servers to six clusters in the data centre, improving reliability and performance across the Asia/Pacific region.

Our customer has expanded the scope of this project from 30 sites to around 200 worldwide.
