Adoption of 3D modelling and 2D GIS in specialist areas such mine planning and environmental management is far less than expected. We predicted a maturing of such techniques due to the rise of portable systems and remote access to data. With improvements in real time graphics generation, interaction and modelling the use of virtual reality and multimedia will increase. Faced with similar situations of complexity and scale, other industries such as petroleum, aerospace and defence were already making active use of more advanced visualisation systems.
