CSC Modernizes Global Software Using New Transformation Automation Capability

The most widely licensed insurance software in the world, CSC’s Integral™, underwent a far-reaching enhancement project that unexpectedly transformed more than the software.

Integral is one of CSC’s comprehensive administration suites for life insurance and annuities/pensions, property and casualty (P&C)/general insurance, and group insurance. The global software provides end-to-end policy/group management, product configuration and business analytics capabilities to more than 250 clients in nearly 40 countries.

When the market expressed interest in a Java-based version of Integral, CSC used a new, patent-pending automation capability aptly named Quick Transformation Engine (QTE) to convert the software. A many-to-many translator, QTE converts application systems written in many languages to run on different technology platforms without the use of middleware.

Unexpected Results

Starting with Integral’s P&C/general insurance component, CSC used QTE to create a Java version of the COBOL-based software in 12 months. After completing the first component, QTE was able to convert the life insurance component, which is approximately the same size, to Java in 3 months with 20 percent of the staff required for the P&C component.

QTE amazed the conversion team by demonstrating that it had learned a great deal about Integral during the first phase. This new knowledge significantly reduced the time, cost, labor and risk of the second phase.
